IRT Theater is experimental to the core. Not only in the kind of boundary-pushing theater it embraces under, but also in the ways in which the space supports the development and performance of novel work by independent artists and the opportunity for mentorship of the next generation of creators. In no better way is this mission expressed than through the theater's annual A Westside Experiment that pairs a working theater company with middle and high school students from around the country. During the first week of the two week program, this year's featured troupe, Vampire Cowboys coach participants in their signature "geek theater" approach to the craft through an immersive bootcamp of improv activities, comedic exercises, puppetry workshops, and stage combat training before drawing from these experience to develop an all original, collaborative piece to be performed at the program's end. Participants are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild and break the rules while gaining insight into the developmental process behind a piece.
