"MLconf gathers communities to discuss the recent research and application of algorithms, tools, and platforms to solve the hard problems that exist within organizing and analyzing massive and noisy data sets." (About Machine Learning Conference)
Gathering Those Who Teach Computers
The Machine Learning Conference (MLconf) gathers programmers in annual events around the country to discuss recent research and new ideas in the field. A subfield of computer science, machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence that gives computers the ability to learn when exposed to new data without being explicitly programmed. It has many uses in online activity and data science, such as in search engines, spam filtering, and autocorrect.
Gaining Popularity Around the Country
The MLconf began in San Francisco in 2012 as a platform to connect thought leaders who work in machine learning, and particularly in graph databases. The gathering has since grown to three more US cities, New York, Atlanta, and Seattle, with plans to pop up in more places around the country. Each city hosts an annual one-day conference featuring speakers and presentations regarding the field. This past year in NYC, some of the key speakers were from Microsoft, Facebook, and Google, all of which use machine learning in their products or sites.
Machine learning is a growing field, both in the number of people involved and its technological importance, and this particular conference has advisors and sponsors from many of the top tech companies in the country. The NYC 2016 event took place in April, and the San Francisco conference occurred on November 11; the date for the 2017 season will be available soon.Image: Conference by Tonu Mauring via Flickr
