"[We] have been working to reduce the stigma around mental health in communities of color and ensure every child has access to mental health support." (About MindRight)
A Mental Health Mission for Teens
Inspired by personal and familial histories with trauma, the founders of MindRight created it with the mission to reduce the stigma around mental health in communities of color. Mindright is a non-profit organization that provides support to teens through free text-based coaching services. When a teen signs up, they are matched with a volunteer coach who checks in with them every day and provides non-judgmental support and coping strategies to help students manage their challenges. This partnership allows for a sense of connection that makes students feel safe and creates space for self-improvement and growth.
Partnering with Schools to Support Students
MindRight works with schools and community organizations to provide direct support to their students and members. While they protect the privacy of individual students, they provide the schools and organizations they work with weekly reports on the emotional wellness of the students overall. They also provide alerts if a student is in a crisis situation. They’ve conducted studies that have shown that schools that use MindRight experience increased attendance, improved graduation rates, and decreased suspensions. If you would like to learn more about MindRight, check out their EdLab Seminar on Vialogues.
